You're tried the push-up bra and the water bra, but after a few outings, they eventually settled in the back of your lingerie drawer. The brassiere has been around, in one form or another, at least since Greek women wore a chest binding called a mastodeton or apodesmos while exercising. When to date the invention of the modern brassiere depends on how one defines the contraption. Metallic constructions that looked like bras, and did serve to hold matters rigidly in place, were around as early as 1859, as a patent granted to Henry S. Lesher of Brooklyn, NY, shows. A metallic bra? Now that?s just wrong. Or how about Charles Moorehouse, who in 1885, came up with an inflatable breast enlarging garment featuring air-filled rubber cups that held each breast with a strapping design. Eek! There is a common denominator regarding both of these creations; these ?bras? were designed by men. Last time I checked, men don?t wear bras. Women do. And a woman is hailed as being the true creator of the bra, 19th-century French feminist Herminie Cadolle, breaking up the corset design and inventing a two-part invention that was ?designed to sustain the bosom and supported by the shoulders.? (The bottom half was a corset that covered only the waist and rear.)
